Slàinte! (say, “sl-AHN-cha”)

Yes, it’s that lovely time of year again, the in-between season of small sprouts, increasingly-warmer breezes, a little more sunshine than before, and lots - yes, LOTS - of Irish music! For those of us (ahem.. like me) who’ve been drawn to Ireland since birth, listening to Irish music is not something we save for the month of March. However, it is a time when the rest of the world doesn’t seem to mind the repetitive folky tunes that tell stories through each intricacy and lilt of a fiddle or bodhran (say, “BOW-rahn” - the “BOW” being something in between “BOW” like the action after a performance, and the “BOW” that you’d do on a fiddle).

Banishing Pagans from Ireland aside : ) , I adore St. Patrick’s Day. To me, it’s always been a time to remember one’s revolutionary history, the proud (though not egotistical) perseverance and strength that has allowed the Irish to survive plight after plight (including one of the longest histories of colonization on the planet!).
This is a day for celebration, great joy and triumph, and certainly a day for many, MANY tunes!
